WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Traffic congestion causes delays, resulting in increased costs in time and money. For freight transporters—whether moving good across town or beyond—this cost is particularly onerous. Because marginal profits are greater for high-value products, delays are especially harmful to regional firms manufacturing these kinds of goods. Therefore, increased traffic negatively impacts the region’s ability to foster business and remain competitive in national and global markets.[i] Travel congestion also impact our region’s air quality. The amount of pollution emitted from vehicles increases during periods of higher traffic because more gas is consumed when vehicles transition from slower to higher speeds than when they simply remain at the same constant speed.[ii]
