WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Over-reliance on auto travel creates traffic congestion, pollution, and increased wear on the region’s transportation infrastructure. Beyond simply a measurement of vehicle miles traveled, this indicator can be used as a proxy indicator for the region’s transportation–land use priorities and greenhouse gas emissions.[i]
